On the Road With Cybergrrl... Digital Camera |
v o i c e s
Have tape recorder, digital camera (from Olympus) and laptop with modem. What else does a grrl need? Stardate 021898, Cybergrrl's Log: San Francisco, CA Met another woman on a flight - from LA to San Fran. Debra Leff, Senior Employment Representative
Debra works in Human Resources and uses the Internet both at work and at home. Here is what she had to say about how she used the Internet at work. "We do recruitment for all different types of positions. We have our own website and on our website is an employment section. We do recruitment on public websites, colleges, labor departments, Career Mosaic, Monster Board. We're also starting to do an offsite database where we'll have our own resumes available through our company nationwide which we'll access through the Internet." Then I asked her how she uses the Net at home. "Right now I'm just starting to play with (the Internet) on a personal level. I have two daughters that like to go online - 10 and 12 - and they like to chat with other children nationwide, they like to look up their favorite movie stars to see what they're doing, and my younger daughter goes online for help with her homework. I don't know what else they do." "What I've done is on the provider we're on they have a Parental Control so I follow their instructions and use it based on their ages. And anything else they want to go on to, I make sure that I'm available." I asked Debra what she hopes to do on the Internet once she learns more about it. "Many times if you're visiting another city, it's a great way to find out about the better hotels at the best location where you want to be, restaurants, things to do. Recipes could be a good thing that I found out from a friend. I know that you can book your own airline ticket, car rental. I just found out recently you can get movie tickets. So just things for entertainment purposes and just to make day to day life easier." Linda Walker, temporarily happily unemployed
Linda was literally about to get online the day after we spoke and I asked her what prompted her to get online. She replied, "Because I've waited to long and I'm ready." What would be the first thing she did when she got online? "Email people whose email addresses I've had for the last year or two. It's sort of like buying a CD player after you've had CD's for a couple of years." "I think my feelings now are a lot more positive than they were even a couple of months ago because now I feel like I can use it for information as opposed to fearing it for information. It seemed too big before and now although I'm going online tomorrow, I'm looking forward to it instead of resisting it." "Right now, one of the first things I'm going to do is look up things about trademarks. And I'm interested in doing things with international business so I have a whole set of things involving different U.S. departments involving commerce that I have the email addresses for and I want to get to certain information. I want to do research. I want to go to the library on the Internet!" "It's taken me probably 3 or 4 years to warm up to (the Internet and computers). I had a job last year and the entire job was on computer although not on the Internet so that was my introduction to working with a Macintosh and so my next step is to take it outside of the building. I had to work up to that point." |
